Whenever man works for a living, he talks of how much time he should have for spending on himself, family, friends and the world. Instead, it’s his leisure time and time spent recuperating from the work that he is doing.
Agreeably, man needs time to spend on pursuits other than his work. Successful enterprises need more working hours and less free time. The reason for their success could be translated into hours of work also. Let’s take the manufacturing industry.
China became the world leader in manufacturing because they took out more working hours from their employees and were driven by results. No doubt, modern machinery helps, but the other stuff, including logistics, needs human interaction.
The USA became dependent on getting every toy, decoration, phone, etc., from other countries. As a result, their people need more leisure time, and their economy cannot mass produce goods of all qualities without lowering their wages.
China took advantage of their inefficient workforce issues and gave them and the rest of the world what they needed at a fraction of the cost. Even Japan couldn’t match China even though Japan has a hardworking population.
When we hear extreme cases like people collapsing or sleeping on the street corners in Japan or the rise in psychological distress in developed nations, man attributed it to extreme hard work.
People spend three and half hours on the phone daily, checking it at every 58 minutes interval. So if a man spends about 25 per cent of his waking hours from checking phones, then where did that time come from?
Of course, it came from working hours, etc.
This was just one example where man has started relying on other stuff while using his leisure time. He hardly cooks and orders food from outside, buys most of the stuff online, and orders transport or holidays online. Now, what else would account for easing his life?
In light of the above, it can be noted that when one asks for work-life balance and demands more free time for other pursuits, he is never going to reach anywhere in life.
Michelangelo worked for 14 hours every single day to produce some of the most stunning pieces of art and over 10000 papers of scientific works.
Each paper had diagrams drawn to scale and a working model to prove it. So go ahead and calculate how much he would have worked per day.
Great people who leave behind a legacy never crib to the amount of work they do. They are driven by work and are extremely passionate about their jobs. Where would you like to be? Just taking birth and not leaving an impact on anyone would be a worthless waste of a lifetime.
Kings and queens, scientists and philosophers, engineers of great monuments, explorers, and spiritual leaders have all worked harder than usual to achieve their objectives. As a result, they left behind a legacy for us to ponder upon.
